Water and the Economy
Water is an especially critical natural resource in Texas, but quality is as important as quantity. A plentiful supply of clean water is critical to economic development. Businesses considering whether to locate to a new community investigate the availability, cost, and quality of water. Just as a company would not intentionally purchase a piece of property with a hazardous waste problem, businesspersons are skeptical of moving to communities that will have a significant tax burden due to water problems. It is a basic business decision: if water or taxes are too expensive, they will go elsewhere. Polluted water hurts economic development.
